TECONNAUGHT senior ladies have raised over £1,000 so far to help support local NHS hospital workers during the coronavirus outbreak.

What started out as a fun activity on Facebook to keep up the spirits of the players has netted the money to deliver 150 individual bags of soap and hand cream for nurses and workers in local hospitals.

Player Louise Sweeney edited a Facebook video showing all of the players seemingly taking part in a top tap challenge using a toilet roll and the money has rolled in over the last few days.

A further £470 – enough to provide another

60-70 bags – was raised by online pub quiz organised by player Catherine McGrillen last Saturday night.

Manager Peter Carson explained: “With the current lockdown of life in general not just GAA, a lot of the local clubs have been posting player profiles on social media. We talked about doing this as well but then decided to do something a little different but add in a donation by each player so we could give something back to some friends who work in the NHS.

“It took a number of days to get all the videos in and then Louise Sweeney worked her magic on the computer to put the video together. Once the video was posted within the groups WhatsApp we decided to post in on the club’s Facebook page and that’s when it really took off. There were a number of requests to donate so Louise again created a Go fund me page.”

Peter said that the players initially set a target of £300 but now have tripled that thanks to the online support.

He added: “The ladies have been in contact with the local hospitals to ask what would be best to get them and Catherine McGrillen is currently finishing off preparations to provide individual bags with soap and hand cream for over 150 members of staff within the NHS.

“Any further money that comes in after the bags have been delivered we are going too donate to a local homeless charity.”
