CROSSGAR is in line for a major economic boost with the creation of 40 new jobs.

The full and part-time jobs are being created as a result of a £1.7m investment in a new SuperValu store and filling station at the Downpatrick Road.

Musgrave Retail Partners NI has teamed up with Crossgar businessman Gabriel Bell to develop a 6,000 sq. ft. store and filling station which is expected to open this September.

The new retail outlet is being constructed adjacent to the well-known Bells Motor Works which is owned by Gabriel’s brother, Charlie. The Bell family has been trading at this part of the village since 1935.

Construction work on the new store is well underway at the Downpatrick Road site and the new outlet will offer a range of services including a butchery, deli and hot food bar. There will also be dedicated parking for over 70 vehicles.

Mr. Bell said his family has been trading at this part of the village for around 80 years, after his grandfather started a cattle and poultry business in the 1930s.

“I’m very excited to partner Musgrave on this new venture and with their support and investment, open a SuperValu store in September on the family site, where it all began almost eight decades ago,” he said.

“I’m committed to bringing quality service, produce, value for money and employment to the community who have been so loyal through the years.”

The new store will service several residential housing developments as well as a number of schools and a large rural hinterland.

SuperValu sales director, Nigel Maxwell, said he’s delighted to welcome such an established businessman as Gabriel Bell to SuperValu retail group.

“This new SuperValu store represents a significant investment for Musgrave Retail Partners with the creation of large number of jobs for local people,” he said.

“With the store’s key location on the main road between Downpatrick and Belfast it will provide an important service to passing trade as well as the local community.”

Rowallane councillor, Terry Andrews, has welcomed news of the £1.7m investment which will create 40 new jobs.

“The creation of so many new jobs provides the Crossgar economy with a major boost. To have such a prestigious new store opening in the village is tremendous,” he added.
