3 December 2014

STORIES and memories of Strangford are contained in the latest magazine produced by the Inverbrena Local History Group.

The magazine will be launched on Friday evening containing a series of articles and photographs on the history and personalities of the greater Strangford area.

Among the stories is one from David Maxwell who recalls his childhood memories in the village in the 1930s and 1940s.

Michael McConville takes a look at the history of the various quays and slips of Strangford in a well illustrated article with some stunning old photographs.

The magazine will be launched by celebrated Irish language expert, Aodán Mac Póilin, who has been director of the Ultach Trust since 1990.

Mr. Mac Póilin was born in Belfast and lives in the Shaw’s Road Irish-speaking community. He graduated from the University of Ulster with a degree and M.Phil in Irish Studies.

He has been active in the European Bureau for Lesser-Used Languages and the Community Relations Council, was chairman of the first Irish-medium school in Northern Ireland, and was on the boards of Foras na Gaeilge (the cross-border Irish language implementation body), and the Columba Initiative.

He has written and lectured extensively on various aspects of the Irish language, literature and culture.

New members are welcome to join Inverbrena Local History Group which meets on the third Friday of each month in Inverbrena Hall, at 8pm. Anyone who wishes to contribute articles to future journals should contact inverbrena@hotmail.co.uk.

The magazine, which costs £9, will be available from Kevin Og’s shop after the launch.
