St. Patrick’s shock St. Mary’s in final

19 March 2014

HAIL St Patrick’s, the cup kings of Division 1 in the Lecale Indoor Bowling League.

St Patrick’s turned the form book on its head when they took on hot favourites St Mary’s in the cup final played at Kilmegan last Tuesday night.

Having lost 10-0 both home and away to St. Mary’s in the league, St. Patrick’s were not exactly brimming with confidence as they squared up to the current league champions.

Cup finals are a different kettle of fish and it’s all about who plays to their potential and hits form on the night. St. Patrick’s took their chance; they adapted to the slick mats better and played with no fear as they put St. Mary’s to the sword by 47-39 shots.

St. Patrick’s made the brighter start. The Jim Toman rink of Patricia Lavery, Kathleen Brennan and Sean Lavery got St. Patrick’s up and running with a 6-4 win over Ricky Cathcart, while Gerry Walsh held Tony Ward to a 4-4 draw.

In the second quarter the Ballynahinch bowlers made their move. Ed Murnin had a 6-5 win over Michael Trimby while Steven Hunter won five of the six ends in a superb 11-2 win to really put St. Patrick’s in the driving seat going into the half time interval.

At the break St. Patrick’s led 26-15, so St. Mary’s had it all to do in the second half.

Steven Hunter put St. Patrick’s even further ahead when he secured his double with a 7-2 win over Tony Ward. On the other mat Ricky Cathcart gave St. Mary’s a glimmer of hope when he scored a count of six on the fifth end to secure a 7-5 win over Ed Murnin.

Going into the last two games St. Patrick’s had a 14 shot lead and St. Mary’s fought like tigers to try to redress the balance.

Paddy Murray made a gallant effort to pull the match out of the fire with a fine 9-2 win over Gerry Walsh. On the other mat Jim Toman was making sure there was to be no way back for St. Mary’s and his quartet saw the new cup Kings over the line with a 6-5 win over Michael Trimby, securing their double in the process.

Congratulations to St. Patrick’s who played well throughout the match and thoroughly deserved their victory.

The Lecale Committee would like to thank Kilmegan for the use of their excellent facilities and the superb supper.
