St. Brigid’s PTA grateful for support from town

SIR, — St. Brigid’s Primary School in Downpatrick held its first bingo night in the assembly hall on Thursday, May 24.

The focus of the evening was primarily a social, community event in order to bring our community closer together. This enabled mums, dads and children to meet and get to know one another in a friendly, sociable environment.

Our secondary purpose was to raise some vital funds for the school parents’ fund.

I am writing this letter because we were so overwhelmed and grateful for the donations from many of our local retailers. I believe it’s important that we recognise the valuable contribution our smaller retailers make to events such as the one we held last week.

As a result of those contributions, our night was a great success and we raised £250 for the school.

It is our experience that when asked, many of our retailers including pharmacies, jewellers, confectioners, hairdressers, beauticians and butchers, fruiterers and delicatessens and sports outlets, are happy to donate a prize or a voucher to our fundraising events. Without their generosity, we could not raise the funds we do and would find it very difficult.

Therefore, I would ask our local community to think about this when they decide to make a purchase.

If these shops were to shut we would lose a vital part of our living community. Larger corporations don’t share our local community aspirations. We need to keep our local retailers alive by supporting them.

Yours etc.,
