Slieve Patrick is still owned by Diocese despite work proposal

SIR, — In the edition of the Down Recorder published on August 6 it was wrongly reported that Down District Council had “incorporated Slieve Patrick into public ownership.”

Whilst a joint project has been agreed, bringing together the Catholic Church, Down District Council and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to carry out some works upon the mountain, the ownership of Slieve Patrick mountain remains in the title of the Diocese of Down and Connor. As such, while Slieve Patrick is a wonderful historic site open to all the public, it is not in ‘public ownership.’

The Parish of Saul and Ballee have made a particular commitment to maintain the sacred site of Slieve Patrick for a period of ten years.

This work is being carried out by local church volunteers. I pay immense tribute to the commitment of these volunteers who have ensured that Slieve Patrick is kept in very good order.

To assist the volunteers with this important task, I would appeal to all who visit this sacred heritage site to respect it as a place of worship. Visitors can assist its upkeep by disposing of litter in an appropriate manner and dog owners should keep their dogs on leads and clean up after them.

Yours etc.,

P. ALEXANDER
