Shock after ammunition find on Killough beach

28 June 2017

AN ammunition find on Killough beach has been described as “worrying” by local MLA Colin McGrath.

Around three dozen bullets, two silencers and four shotgun cartridges were found by a group of children at the weekend.

The youngsters alerted police who arrived and removed the items for forensic examination.

Mr McGrath said: “I am very worried about the public location of this find. These are not the type of items to be left lying around.

“While I am pleased that the items are now out of circulation I am concerned about how they may have found their way into the wrong hands and the fact that they were found by children underscores the worrying nature of this find.

“Local people will be rightly shocked by this find and the random nature of their disposal. Answers do need to be found in this matter.

Killough Beach is a very open area and it seems a very odd set of items to have been left there and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the PSNI.”

A police spokesman said: “A quantity of ammunition was discovered on the beach in Killough, County Down, on Saturday, June 24. It has been recovered for examination.

“Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery.”
