Safety concerns raised as drivers park on road

28 August 2019

CONCERN has again been expressed about a major safety hazzard at one of the district’s busiest roads on the outskirts of Newcastle.

Last Sunday’s soaring temperatures encouraged many to visit the picturesque Bloody Bridge area and with the car park full, many drivers parked on the adjacent main road.

It’s understood that the car park was full from early morning, with a large number of drivers parking their cars on the Kilkeel Road, effectively reducing it to one lane. There was also a minor collision involving two vehicles.

A number of residents took to social media to vent their anger at drivers whom they claimed showed a “complete disregard” for the safety of other road

users by their inconsiderate parking.

Several residents revealed that vehicles parked on sections of footpath, hampering pedestrian access, especially those pushing prams and who have young children.

In the past, concerned residents have called for additional parking at the Bloody Bridge area with others calling for double yellow lines to stop drivers using part of what is a particularly busy road as an unofficial car park.

There is a field adjacent to the current car park which a number of local people have suggested could be used as an overspill facility.

They say given that the Bloody Bridge area is popular all-year round, additional parking must be provided to help reduce congestion and make the area safer for everyone.

Mournes councillor Willie Clarke says he is aware of the problems which developed last weekend and agrees that the issue needs to be addressed.

He also shares the frustration of those concerned about a number of issues at the Bloody Bridge, in particular road safety.

Cllr Clarke says it is clear that there is not enough parking provision at the Bloody Bridge at this time of year given the number of visitors to the area, confirming he planned to raise the issue with roads officials at a special meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down Council last night.

“The issue of cars parking along a very busy main road is a concern and one that we need to address,” he remarked.

“The parking restricts the width of the road, making it difficult for larger vehicles, especially lorries and buses travelling in opposite directions, to pass one another safely. This parking also has implications for emergency vehicles getting past.”

Cllr Clarke said he understands people’s concern and frustration about what is happening at this location. He also agreed with suggestions to provide double yellow lines to dissuade people from parking on the busy main road.

He added: “We rely heavily on tourism in Newcastle and across the district. The Bloody Bridge area is very popular and given the number of people who visit this location we must ensure the area is safe for all road users. Parking on the main road is an issue we need to get to grips with.

“There is a private coach operator who transports people from Donard Park to the Bloody Bridge and perhaps this is a service which needs to be promoted more in a bid to ease the congestion at the Kilkeel Road beauty spot.”
