Safer driving needed in Downpatrick street

SIR, — Whilst I agree with, and give my full support to, a one-way traffic system in Edward Street, Downpatrick, regardless of the direction it would be flowing, I must point out that the decision to change the one-way system in the upper part of St. Dillon’s Avenue during the recent one-way trial was a mistake. It almost, for myself, caused traffic accidents on several occasions.

The traffic emerging from the upper part of St. Dillon’s Avenue mostly ignored the central white line when exiting at John Street, and ignored the right of way for drivers into the lower end of the Avenue.

As a resident and driver residing in the lower end of the Avenue I hope there will be a more practical solution the next time the one-way system comes into farce.

In reference to the letter ‘One-way system worked’ in the Recorder, dated December 14, 2011, I personally was unaware of any poll carried out asking for the views of residents.

Yours etc.,

SAFE DRIVER,

St. Dillon’s Avenue,

Downpatrick.
