SDLP's Sinead Bradley elected on the day of her father's funeral

3 March 2017

THE SDLP's Sinead Bradley has been elected on the third count in South Down.

There was great sadness at the election count in Lisburn as Ms Bradley's father, former South Down Assemblyman PJ Bradley, died earlier this week and was buried this morning.

Ms. Bradley polled 7323 first preference votes, increasing her personal vote by over 30%. The party ran just two candidates in the constituency rather than the normal three.

Her running mate in South Down is in a battle with Patrick Brown, of Alliance, but is expected to be re-elected for the final seat.

The DUP's Jim Wells is likely to be the next person elected.
