Rowers celebrate at Scottish event

19 July 2017

STRANGFORD Coastal Rowing Club sent a large contingent of members to the most challenging and original Scottish Coastal Rowing regatta in Ullapool recently.

Members from across Lecale travelled for the event with Downpatrick, Ballyhornan, Kilclief, Ballycruttle and Ballyculter all represented. An Irish tent village was created in the middle of a sea of Scottish tents.

Strangford competed in men’s, women’s and mixed races in U17’s, U19’s, adults, over 40’s, over 50’s and over 60s and performed creditably not only on the water but at the giant Ceilí in Ullapool High School Hall on Saturday night.

Dozens of races across the two kilometre course were timed to avoid the Stornoway ferry, and the Strangford club received a great welcome from the Scottish clubs, many of whom are travelling to the Skiffie Championships in Delamont Park on the weekend of July 22.
