PLANS by the Department of Infrastructure to resurface a section of the Castleward Road, near Strangford, have been welcomed by a local politician.

Downpatrick area councillor Gareth Sharvin has been campaigning for the work to be carried out along the busy route on behalf of residents in Strangford, Portaferry and further a field.

In addition, he said the Castleward and Downpatrick roads outside the village are popular tourist routes.

“In this vicinity, we have Castleward which is popular given its links with the Game of Thrones television series, the Lecale and Ulster Way routes and Strangford Lough,” said Cllr Sharvin.

He revealed that road consultants from the government department have been on site measuring from the Castleward four roads to the entrance to Strangford.

“The improvement scheme will include improved drainage and this upgrade is is greatly needed,” the councillor continued, confirming he was successful in lobbying for the Shore Road to be resurfaced only a few months ago.

“This has been a fantastic scheme for the local area and the feedback from residents has been extremely positive.” he said.

“The resurfacing scheme is expected to commence in the next couple of months and I would ask drivers to be understanding as there will be delays, but the end result will drastically improve a section of a busy road that requires upgrading.”
