ORGANISATIONS in Newcastle and Castlewellan are bidding for a £10,000 prize to invest in the latest energy efficiency technology.

Newcastle Yacht Club and Castlewellan Futures have made it through to the third round of Power NI’s Quest energy saving competition.

The Yacht Club based at Newcastle harbour has been active in the community for over 50 years and is hoping to win the top prize to improve the energy rating of its building and educate its members and local people about energy efficiency.

Castlewellan Futures is a people-led project aimed at discovering what the town wants to be in the future and how it will get there.

Its dedicated members are creating an action plan to tackle issues like the environment and the rise in energy costs which are impacting upon the community.

Newcastle Yacht Club’s Leslie Mackie said it’s “very excited” to be moving to the next stage of the Quest competition.

“The whole community has been very supportive, helping us through this competition. We know that with their continued support we will be able to make a great difference for everyone involved,” she added.

Michael Donnelly, from Castlewellan Futures, said it was “great news” to hear that it’s ready to move to the next stage of the competition.

He added: “We are very determined to succeed and will work very hard to be the first to complete the next stage.”
