Putting music to golf as Irish Open beckons

6 May 2015

THE Mourne Mountains will be alive with the sound of music at the Irish Open.

A unique piece of golf inspired performance by music and theatre royalty Brian Irvine and Owen McCafferty will be staged at the the Irish Open Fringe Festival.

The 27-minute sparkling LoveGolfOpera will be performed by Northern Ireland Opera in Newcastle on Saturday, May 30.

Composer Brian Irvine has been recently appointed Belfast Music Laureate whilst Owen McCafferty is a Northern Ireland award winning playwright.

Together they have produced a witty piece of musical history, which will lift the lid on what happens when love and the world’s greatest sports collide.

The music soundtrack recording will also involve the acclaimed RTE symphony orchestra.

The free to attend performance of LoveGolfOpera will be at 5pm in Castle Park on May 30.

Chair of Newry, Mourne and Down Council, councillor Naomi Bailie, said: ”We are really pulling out all the stops to ensure that there will be a range of events in town that everyone can enjoy during the Irish Open Fringe Festival.

“It is very exciting for the council to be involved in this unique performance. I would encourage locals and visitors alike to make the most of this one-off opportunity and be the first to witness this performance that undoubtedly will become famous worldwide.”

Those attending the comedy night on the Saturday evening at St Mary’s Hall will be in for a double treat as the NI Opera have also agreed to warm up the crowds as they await the arrival of Northern Ireland’s Queen of Comedy, May McFettridge.
