Presentations bring Spa season to a close

SPA Golf Club’s 2014 season was brought to a glittering close last week at the annual prize presentation night when Ken Burtney and Attracta Byrne were named Golfers of the Year.

Both played exceptional golf during the year with Attracta taking home four trophies, while on his way to the top award Ken also claimed the Wallace Cup.

But Spa captain Robert Gartley said the real winner of the past successful season was Spa Golf Club, which, he said, had enjoyed a “fantastic year” both on and off the course.

Clubs did not function without a lot of support work in the background and he praised all Spa staff members including the greenkeepers along with those in the bar, restaurant and office. He also expressed his gratitude to the club’s hard working competitions convenor, David McCullagh, for his dedication to Spa Golf Club.

In her remarks lady captain Emer Canavan congratulated all the winners and thanked the team captains and team members who had brought so many honours to Spa.

She also thanked all Spa ladies and the committee for their wonderful support during her year in office with particular thanks to lady secretary Heather Edgar and Mandy Murphy, the handicaps/competition secretary.

This was the last major showpiece occasion of the year for the two captains and both Robert and Emer wished their successors and enjoyable and successful year in office.

The Mitchell Cup, awarded to ladies scoring a hole-in-one, was shared by Denise Cunningham, Rachael Foreman and Veronica McCormick. The trophy is sponsored by Carol Mitchell, past lady captain of Spa and now a leading member of the Irish Ladies’ Golfing Union.
