Posnett powers Saul to cosy win

13 March 2019

TEAM Saul claimed victory in the CosyRoof Winter League at St Patrick’s Golf Club.

Saul were led by captain Phil Posnett and Donard, who they beat in the final, were headed by deputy captain captain Gerry Reilly.

After poor weather on Saturday it was Saul that were quickest out of the blocks come Sunday morning with Phil and Ed Baggley snr both shooting 38 points.

These scores were quickly followed by their team-mates Joe Deegan with (37 points) and Lawrence Craig with 36 points.

The champagne was now chilling nicely, particularly as the first two Donard scores from Gerry Reilly with 34 points and Bill Dunlop with 33 points, made no inroads into Saul’s 149 total.

In the early afternoon the drama began to unfold as Joe O’Neill shot an incredible 43 points to bring Donard within touching distance of the prize. Their hopes now rested with the ever-consistent Joe McStay, but the persistent rain and previous handicap cuts were to prove decisive as his score of 37 points gave Donard a total of 147, missing out by just two points in the end.

Well done to the Saul team of Phillip Posnett, Ed Baggley, Joe Deegan, Lawrence Craig, Paul Reynolds, Barney Madine, Paddy Woods and Denis McBrinn.

The club wishes to thank their sponsor, Phillip Polly.
