STAFF and pupils of St Colmcille’s High School in Crossgar have said farewell to a long-serving teacher who has retired.

Mr Paul Boyd, who taught Technology and Technical Drawing, retired at the end of last week.

Mr Boyd played a leading role in the design of the school’s technology building which was opened in 1994.

He carried out many roles within the school, including head of department, head of year, form teacher and house captain.

Mr Seamus Hanna, school principal, said Mr Boyd had a huge impact on generations of young people.

“He leaves a lasting legacy in the very successful departments he dedicated his professional career to,” Mr Hanna said.

“The closure of schools before the summer led us to have to ask Paul to delay his retirement until Halloween as we could not recruit a new teacher until now. Paul retires from St Colmcille’s High School after 31 years teaching Technology and Design.

“Paul will be missed greatly by all in our school community and we wish him a very happy and well-earned retirement, where he can watch his beloved West Ham.”

Mr Boyd said he will leave the school with nothing but fond memories of his long time spent there.

“It was amazing to read all the comments that were left on Facebook. I was bowled over. I definitely was not expecting that,” he said

“To my pupils, ex-pupils and parents who now have children at St Colmcille’s. Looking through those comments it was like a who’s who of fun, craic and laughter.

“I hope you enjoyed your time in my class, I know I certainly did no matter how challenging it was and will remember you with great affection.

“To my many ex-colleagues, the pleasure was all mine. You guided me through some tough times but when the chips were down, I knew you were always there to support, advise and guide me through. For this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“This is what makes St Colmcille’s so special. The sense of belonging to a very big family who are always there for you.”

Mr Boyd said he will be very sad to leave St Colmcille’s adding it has been a special place to spend such a big part of his career.

“It was certainly an emotional struggle last Friday. To leave a place with so many memories, a place and people you love was very difficult but I know deep down it had to be done.”

He added: “I wish my successor every luck for his future at St Colmcille’s and if he enjoys himself as much as I did, then the job will be as easy and rewarding as I found it. I certainly hope to enjoy retirement.”
