Popular golf classic raises £5,000 for cancer charity

A GOLF classic held in Ardglass Golf Club has raised nearly £5,000 for Cancer Research.

The event was organised in memory of local man Sean McCormick, who passed away in May.

Sean was diagnosed with bowel cancer five years ago at just 57 years of age, and following chemotherapy and surgery had been able to lead a full life right up until the early part of this year.

His family and friends were overwhelmed by the level of support they received and would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way, either by taking part or providing sponsorship and prizes.

Accepting the cheque for £4,759, Cancer Research area fundraising manager, Adele Harris, said the charity spent over £2m each year in Northern Ireland on a range of research related programmes.

“Our dedicated Cancer Research UK Centre in Belfast is a network of doctors, scientists and nurses from across the region, who come together to find better ways to detect, monitor and treat cancer,” she said.

“Much progress has been made, with death rates for lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined falling by more than a fifth in Northern Ireland over the last 20 years, but there is still work to do. Every hour, someone in Northern Ireland is diagnosed with cancer.

“This extremely generous donation will help Cancer Research UK continue to work towards the day when all cancers are cured.”
