Police detain four after estate attack

23 October 2013

VIOLENT early morning scenes in Newcastle on Monday have left a burnt out car and led to four arrests.

Shortly after 3am on Monday trouble broke out between a number of people in the Burrendale Park Road area of the town.

Along with the people fighting outside their homes residents had to put up with windows being smashed at a block of flats and damage to two cars, which included one being set alight.

Four men aged 24, 26, 28 and 39 were arrested by police following the trouble.

The incident was condemned by a councillor in the town, who said whoever was involved had no place in Down District.

“I want to explicitly condemn all and any individuals who were involved in the altercation that took place here on Monday morning,” said councillor Willie Clarke.

“I have talked to local residents who were awoken in the early hours to the scenes of violence and mayhem which took place.

“There is a sense of shock and disbelief in the estate and people are extremely unhappy that this type of behaviour has taken place on their doorstep.

“This area is home to a number of families and it is important that these people feel safe in their own homes.

“We have a car burnt out, within yards of an innocent resident’s front door and windows smashed in a block of flats which also contain a number of law abiding people. This is simply unacceptable.

“It is my understanding that a number of people have been arrested following the incident and this is to be welcomed.

“It is important that these people face the full rigours in the law in order to stop this from occurring again, for this reason I would appeal to anyone with any information regarding the incident to bring it forward to the PSNI or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,” he said.
