Police appeal after sex assault claim

POLICE have appealed for information after a woman was sexually assaulted at Downpatrick bus station earlier this week.

A 23 year-old man has been arrested after police received a report that a woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted at the Market Street bus station on Wednesday afternoon.

The man was detained shortly after police received the report and has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Chief Inspector Gillian West said the incident occurred in a public place at a busy time of the day. “I would ask anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to contact Downpatrick Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 543 of 03/08/16,” she said.
“It is believed that this is an isolated incident, however as a reassurance to the local community there will be an increase in police patrols in the local area.”
