Ploughman to do battle for world title

30 October 2013

FORMER world ploughing champion Samuel Gill, from Downpatrick, has triumphed once again on the local stage.

The Listooder Ploughing Society member won the world style conventional class at the Northern Ireland championships in Bushmills, edging out his twin brother David.

Winning the title qualified Samuel to represent Northern Ireland at the World Ploughing Championships which will be held next year in France. He is a previous winner of the World Championship.

Another member of the Gill family came close to winning the vintage class at the weekend when William, also a member of Listooder Ploughing Society, came second to James Adair, from Ballyeaston.

At the same venue the Young Farmers Clubs soil assessment competition was held with defending champion Richard Kane, of Spa YFC, winning ahead of clubmate Neil Patterson.
