Petrol station to be redeveloped

Petrol station to be redeveloped

31 August 2016

A CASTLEWELLAN petrol station and retail outlet is in line for major redevelopment.

Planners have rubber-stamped a proposal to replace an existing station in the town with an ultra-modern new development, which will be larger than the current business.

The existing station is expected to be demolished to make way for the new development which will feature enhanced parking and a one-way traffic system to facilitate customers.

Councillor Patrick Clarke is pleased planners have approved the redevelopment proposals for Lennon’s Garage which he said will “substantially improve” the current facility.

“The proposed new petrol station, forecourt and retail amenity will be sympathetic to the current buildings which surround it, including Castlewellan Presbyterian Church. The new development is also in keeping with the guidelines set out in the Castlewellan conservation area guide,” he explained.

“There will also be a very sizeable reduction in the size of the current petrol filling station canopy which will add to the aesthetic look and design of the new development.”

Councillor Clarke said the Newcastle Road business plays an important role supporting the Castlewellan economy, providing local employment. He is pleased that planning permission is now in place to allow redevelopment work to start.
