Perfect example of how not to surface a street

SIR, — Question: How long does it take to resurface a quarter of a mile of road?

Answer: When Downpatrick Roads Service is involved, four weeks and counting.

Never have I seen such incompetence. A job which should have taken a weekend at the most has been dragged out over a month, with bits and pieces being done here and there.

Admittedly the introduction of the one-way system in Edward Street is working but this job should have been finished weeks ago. 

And now I’ve noticed the children’s playground at Knocknashinna Road is being ripped up to add to the chaos and pedestrian ramps at St. Dillon’s Avenue, which were installed three weeks ago, are now being done — again.

I watched a huge articulated lorry try to negotiate the junction at St. Dillon’s and Edward Street yesterday and then proceed to get stuck halfway down St. Dillon’s, before eventually ending up back on the Ardglass Road at St. Mary’s School. Somebody should have videoed this whole carry on. It would have been good on “You’ve Been Framed”

Still, it’ll be Christmas soon. Will it be finished by then?
