THE fourth annual Youth and Future Talent Awards (YAFTAs) has been officially launched at Down Arts Centre.

The awards, which will highlight unsung heroes who contribute to their families, youth groups or the wider community, were launched members of Newry and Mourne Youth Council supported by the Education Authority’s (EA) youth service .

Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairwoman, Gillian Fitzpatrick, said the council was delighted to support the Youth and Future Talent Awards, which she said would reward the talent and achievements of the district’s most inspirational young people.

“I would encourage people to nominate a young person or group of young people that you know who have gone above and beyond in contributing to their families and communities, giving them the well deserved recognition for their hard work and effort,” she said.

EA youth officer Esther Millar said the awards would also give local organisations a brilliant opportunity to recognise and reward the selfless and creative efforts of young people.

The YAFTAs are awarded in six categories including good relations, voice of young people, innovation and creativity;, community safety, young carer  and inspirational young person.

Nomination forms are now available from the Education Authority Youth offices and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council with a closing date of Friday, February 24, at 5pm.
