Pedestrian crossing for busy road junction

WORK starts in the summer to provide a new pedestrian crossing at one of Downpatrick’s busiest road junctions.

The Department for Infrastructure has confirmed that the crossing linking the Ardglass Road and Edward Street will be in place for the start of the new school term.

Our Lady and St Patrick’s Primary School and St Mary’s High School are a short distance away from the proposed new crossing. It has also been confirmed that a new section of footpath will be provided at Edward Street.

The development of the Downshire Hospital estate as a major new civic centre home to Newry, Mourne and Down Council, the Housing Executive, Fire and Rescue Service, PSNI and the Downe Hospital, has added to the volume of traffic using the busy junction.

There are also two large housing areas, Ardmeen Green and the Demesne.

Local MLAs Colin McGrath, Cathy Mason and Downpatrick councillor Oonagh Hanlon are delighted roads officials have confirmed it will be in place by September.

He said the need for a pedestrian crossing at this busy part of Downpatrick has long been recognised.

“As we see Downpatrick develop, the need for safe and appropriate crossings has never been greater,” Mr McGrath continued.

“I have been dealing with multiple issues regarding road safety, particularly for families and children going to school in the morning.”

The Assemblyman said while agreement had been reached to provide a pedestrian crossing at the busy junction, progress on delivery was stalled.

But, after contacting government department officials, Mr McGrath was informed that work to deliver the eagerly-awaited crossing will start soon and be completed by the end of the summer.

“Not only will there be a dedicated pedestrian crossing, but a new footpath installed along Edward Street which will be a great addition.”

Mr McGrath added: “This is great news for the area and for those children and families that make use of public footpaths and can help ensure that they can navigate the town as safely as possible.

“There is more work to be done to help Downpatrick’s infrastructure and I am fully committed to this and will continue to work to deliver the best outcomes for everyone.”

Mrs Mason said the investment in the new pedestrian crossing is particularly welcome and will enhance pedestrian safety at this busy location.

“It will also encourage more sustainable travel as residents will have a safe crossing and footpath to access the town centre, play park, shops and schools,” she added.

Cllr Hanlon said that following a series of site meetings last year with  residents and roads officials, it has been confirmed that preparatory work will start soon with work due to be and the scheme delivered by September.
