One of busiest roads to receive £500k upgrade

21 February 2024

WORK on a £500,000 scheme to upgrade the Ballynahinch Road in Carryduff starts next Monday.

Resurfacing work on one of the province’s most busiest roads will be carried out in four stages, extending from Carryduff roundabout to beyond the Green Pastures housing development.

Stormont infrastructure minister, John O’Dowd, said the substantial investment will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users.

He said the investment demonstrates his commitment to improving the road network which is vital for connecting businesses and communities.

Ahead of contractors arriving on site, the minister has thanked residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.

First phase work runs from next Monday until Friday, March 1 with contractors focusing on a section of road from Carryduff roundabout to the junction of Church Road which will be closed between 9.30am and 4.30pm.

This will be followed by a weekend closure from Saturday, March 2  at 7.30am until the following evening at 6pm.

During this phase of the works local access will be maintained one way from the Carryduff roundabout towards Church Road.

Phase two work starts on Monday, March 4 between the Hillsborough Road and Meadowvale Park which will be closed between 9.30am and 4.30pm.

Third phase work begins on Monday, March 11 and continues until Friday, March 22, between Meadowvale Park and Green Pastures, with this section closed overnight between 9pm and 6am.

The final phase of resurfacing of the busy road will focus on the Church Road junction with the Hillsborough Road and will require a weekend closure with dates to be confirmed.

During the various closures, diversions will operate via the Saintfield, Belfast, Lisburn, Carryduff and Ballynahinch roads.

The Department for Infrastructure said it has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience.

But it has warned that while steps have been taken to accommodate local access and Translink bus and school services throughout the resurfacing scheme, road users should expect some delays.

They are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the resurfacing works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions, it’s hoped the scheme will be substantially complete by Friday, March 22.
