SIR, — The recent introduction of a temporary one-way traffic system at Edward Street in Downpatrick was a major success.
Before the scheme began, Sinn Fein carried out a poll in the area to ascertain the views of people about the one-way system becoming permanent and the majority of residents expressed support.
There was no doubt
Edward Street was free
from congestion and disruption when the one-way system was introduced recently to allow work on a major resurfacing scheme to take place.
Over the past number of weeks people got used to the one-way system, but two-way traffic has now returned which has caused problems for drivers and seen a return of congestion to this part of the town.
I know that the Roads Service did monitor the temporary one-way system and its officials must also know it was a success.
And while I understand the Roads Service is planning to consult with residents in the Edward Street, St. Dillon’s Avenue, John Street and Ardmore Avenue areas about the return of a permanent one-way system, there is already an appetite for such a system to be put in place.
Yours etc.,
CLLR. ÉAMONN MAC CON MIDHE,
Downpatrick.
