A STAFF nurse at the Downe Hospital is celebrating after caring for patients for more than four decades.

Theresa Malone — who works in the outpatients department at the Downpatrick hospital —  started her nursing career as a nursing assistant in Ards Hospital in 1981 before undertaking her nurse training in Bangor Hospital and the School of Nursing within the Ulster Hospital.

She subsequently took up a nursing post within the Downe Hospital in July 1986, where she is presently based.

Within her time working at the Downe, Theresa has completed many courses to further her career such as a Diploma in Health Studies as well as a Diploma in Marie Curie Cancer Nursing.

Theresa’s colleagues in the outpatients department surprised her with a recent tea party to mark this amazing achievement and she was presented with a bunch of flowers and a card along with many well wishes from colleagues.

Outpatients Deputy Sister, Joanne Hall, described Theresa as a “very caring nurse, always putting her patients and staff first, especially through the pandemic”.

Joanne added: “It has been a privilege to work alongside Theresa and to have her as a colleague and friend.”

When asked about her achievement, Theresa added:  “I have had a wonderful career and am so lucky to work with such a great team.”
