Night time tennis in Newcastle

12 November 2014

SATURDAY night youth tennis has started at Newcastle Tennis Club, with 14 juniors playing in the opening session last weekend.

Described as a tennis youth club, the new Saturday night sessions are for any club member of secondary school age.

With 20-minute doubles and singles tennis games, plus table tennis inside the Bryansford Road clubhouse, it is hoped that the club will prove popular through the long dark winter nights and onwards into the spring. Saturday night youth tennis runs from 7-9pm every weekend.

Meanwhile, the club’s juniors have been representing Newcastle at the Apex clinic Ulster Junior Indoor Championships at the David Lloyd centre in Dundonald.

Jack Cunningham, Michael Flanigan, Ciaran Flanigan and Gabriel Corrigan all participated in various singles and doubles categories.

The four Newcastle boys all did well against tough competition, with players coming from across Ulster and beyond to bid for the provincial titles.

Ciaran Flanigan did particularly well in the U-12 boys novices, battling through to the semi-final stages.

Ultimately, it was Corrigan who brought home a trophy to Newcastle after reaching the final of the U-16 boys novices. The Shimna College 13 year-old carried home the runners-up trophy after a 1-6, 4-6 two-set tussle against John Ewing.
