Newcastle wastewater work welcomed

THE start of work to upgrade Newcastle’s wastewater treatment plant has been welcomed by Mournes councillor Willie Clarke.

NI Water confirmed during a special briefing with local politicians on Monday night that it plans to invest £3.6m on what is being described as a tertiary treatment appraisal.

Cllr Clarke said that, in the meantime, work on an essential programme of additional enhancements is due to start shortly. He said the work will be undertaken by Murphy Dawson Wam JV and concentrate on enhancing the existing three-stage treatment process at the facility.

“The proposed works include new filtration equipment and a state-of-the-art UV system will be installed to ensure optimal treatment efficiency,” Cllr Clarke confirmed.

“This latest NI Water initiative aims to maintain the high standard of effluent quality and meet stringent water quality requirements.”

Cllr Clarke said that due to the fully enclosed design of the treatment facility at the harbour, a section of the side wall will be temporarily removed to accommodate the new large-scale tertiary treatment equipment.

“Most of the construction work will occur inside the existing building, minimising noise and impact on sea swimming and other water-based activities,” he explained.

Cllr Clarke also emphasised the importance of these upgrades for the community.

“These improvements will safeguard our water resources and support our growing population. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of April next year, well ahead of the 2025 bathing season,” he added.
