Newcastle Ladies A grab draw away to Coleraine

Newcastle Ladies A grab draw away to Coleraine

3 June 2015

NEWCASTLE Ladies were in action on Friday night with the A team travelling to Coleraine, while the C team hit the road to Donaghadee.

The A team of Joan Moore, Liz Brown, Wendy Laffin and Dolores Dornan took on a experienced north coast team in what proved to be a close contest.

Brown and Laffin took on the Coleraine number one pairing, only losing on a championship tie-break 10-3, after opening sets of 6-1 and 6-7.

On the other court, Moore and Dornan met the Coleraine number twos, narrowly lost 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 in a tie that could hardly have been tighter.

In the second round of matches, Brown and Laffin secured a confident 6-1, 6-3 win, while Moore and Dornan cruised to an even more comfortable 6-0, 6-1 victory.

At the end of the evening, the overall result was an honourable draw, a fair result to take home to Newcastle.

Meanwhile, the C team were in Donaghadee for their Evergreen League, Division 4 match.

This was all about gaining experience, rather than travelling in hopes of a victory for the Newcastle side of Danielle Gorman, Sinead Kearney, Lesley Cairnduff and Karen Lockhart, in their first year of playing competitive tennis.

So it proved, with a straightforward 4-0 victory for the Donaghadee team, but not without them first losing half a dozen games to the determined Mourne players.

The club’s junior teams have been notching up considerable success in their own competitions.

The U-18 boys have won Division 5 of the Belfast and District League, which qualifies them for the Juvenile Challenge Trophy, to be played later this month.

The U-14 boys A team also win their Division 4 of their league, which qualifies them for the Juvenile Challenge Trophy in their age-group.

The U-14 girls are runners-up in Division 2, also giving them entry to the Juvenile Challenge Trophy play-offs. The trophy matches will be played at the end of June.

All Newcastle’s juniors have played brilliant tennis so far this season and the club wishes them all the best in their quest for silverware.

The club will hold summer scheme tennis coaching and summer camps for various ages of junior player during July and August. More details in the weeks to come.

The club open day will be held on Saturday, July 4. Watch this space for more information.
