Neck-and-neck for SDLP candidate once again

Neck-and-neck for SDLP candidate once again

3 March 2017

IT’S down to the line once again for Portaferry man Joe Boyle.

Determined to secure an Assembly seat as a “reward” for the community that supported him with a 70% turnout, the SDLP candidate said he fears he will disappoint his supporters if he doesn’t win.

However, despite being in the lead with 4,229 votes, he said he realises he faces an uphill challenge in Strangford “the bastion of Unionism”.

All will become clear in the next half hour as over 3,000 transfers are made following the elimination of the UUP’s Philip Smith.

Mr Boyle is battling it out for the last seat for the fifth time. This time the fight is between him and former DUP Education Minister Peter Weir.
