National Trust action in Murlough is causing concern in Dundrum

SIR, — As a dog walker and permit holder at Murlough Nature Reserve in Dundrum, I was dismayed and disgusted to recently learn of the planned changes to permits.

Indeed, these changes have already been implemented. The cost of a permit at present is £23, plus £5 for a fob to gain access through the gate.

I will, come December this year, no longer be granted a permit, but will have to purchase a National Trust membership at a cost of £58, with no concessions for senior citizens like myself.

There has recently been a charge for non-permit holders/National Trust members of £3.50 put in place and I would like to ask what this is for, considering there are no amenities, for example, toilets, nor is there a proper car park, only the foundations left from old Nissen huts.

I would also like to add that the gate will close and be locked at 4.30pm as fobs will no longer be issued so myself and other dog walkers/car owners will be on a time limit.

When I raised my concerns to the National Trust representative at the gate, she told me that the purpose for this is to raise funds for the Trust. It seems that it is only car owners who who are being penalised as there is no charge if you are on foot.

I have enjoyed walking my dogs at Murlough for many years and wish to know why these changes are necessary now?

I would be interested to know if any others are disgruntled as myself and other views on this matter would be welcome.

Yours etc.,

DISGRUNTLED,

Dundrum.
