Mum’s fundraiser in aid of Cancer Fund for Children

25 January 2017

THE mother of a little girl who successfully battled cancer has urged local people to take part in a fundraising walk at Tollymore Forest Park on February 25.

The walk, which is sponsored by NI4Kids, will raise money for the Cancer Fund for Children, which provides support for families whose lives are devastated by cancer.

Organisers hope to raise over £30,000 through this year’s walk to help it continue to provide practical, emotional and financial support to local families affected by cancer as well as free short therapeutic breaks.

Tracey McGeehan, whose family were supported by the charity throughout her daughter’s Cassie’s cancer diagnosis, hopes as many people as possible will wrap up warm and step out next month.

During Cassie’s treatment for a brain tumour, the family benefitted from short break stays at the charity’s therapeutic short break facility, Daisy Lodge.

As a family, she said they had been supporting the Winter Woolly Walk for a few years and enjoyed the experience.

“We all absolutely love it. It’s lovely to be able to get out together and do something fun that’s also great exercise too,” she said.

“Anything we can do to give back to the charity that supported us throughout Cassie’s cancer treatment we try to do.

“We are so blessed that Cassie has recovered from her tumour, and very aware that things could have been so very different, that’s why we will do all we can to raise awareness of the amazing work that Cancer Fund for Children carry out to support children, and their families.”

Cancer Fund for Children fundraiser and mum to two young boys, Naomi Braithwaite, is also encouraging people to talk part.

“Each walk ranges from three to five mile, which is the perfect distance for getting off those winter blues,” she said.

“There will be plenty of warm refreshments to heat cold hands and fun family activities on the day so I would encourage everyone to wrap up and come join us."

Registration for the walk will at 9.30am, with the walk officially getting underway at 10am.
