Mrs Margaret Connolly

MRS Margaret Connolly, of 43 Stream Street, Downpatrick, passed away peacefully in her home on November 10 at the age of 88.

Deeply missed by her family and friends, Margaret has been described by those who knew her best as ‘a lady’.

Born and raised in Struell, the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Patrick Smyth, Margaret was educated by the Sisters of Mercy in Downpatrick.  In her early years Margaret enjoyed country life, particularly working on the family farm.

Margaret chose a career in mental health nursing and graduated to ward sister in the Downshire Hospital. Margaret’s compassionate nature was recognised by both the patients she cared for and the colleagues she worked with.

Margaret married her beloved husband, Tom Connolly, on January 26, 1954, in St Patrick’s Church, Downpatrick, and they had eight children together — Ann, Marie, Pat, Bronagh, Jim, Eilish, Martin and the late baby Sean.

Sadly, Margaret became a young widow following the death of Tom in 1968.  A dedicated and affectionate mother, Margaret worked hard to provide a loving home and a happy life for her children.

On her retirement from nursing Margaret enjoyed playing bridge, watching sports on television, travelling with friends and, particularly, spending time with her growing family.

A caring, gentle, unassuming person, Margaret always endeavoured to avoid confrontation, preferring to treat others with kindness and consideration.  The large attendance at her funeral was a reflection of the great esteem in which she was held across the community.

Margaret leaves to cherish her memory a large family circle, including her younger sister Mary, and her many dear friends and neighbours.
