Mrs Kathleen Edgar

IT was with great sadness that the community in and around Downpatrick learned of the death of Mrs Kathleen Edgar, of Woodgrange Road, Downpatrick, who passed away peacefully at the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, on January 10 at the age of 94.

She was born Kathleen Strain at Martinsground, Woodgrange, on February 12, 1922, and received her education at Annadorn Primary School and Downpatrick Technical College.

On leaving school she commenced employment at H W Kelly & Son, Downpatrick, where she worked as a bookkeeper for many years and became very well known in Downpatrick.

She married her husband, Archie Edgar, in Seaforde Presbyterian Church in October 1952 after a ten-year romance, which included the war years.

A devoted wife and mother, she and Archie had many happy years of marriage. She had many interests, including gardening, painting and church activities. She was well travelled and enjoyed her holidays in many different counties.

Kathleen had a long and healthy life. She was always ready to go on an outing, or visit to friends or relatives. She was an avid diary writer and faithfully recorded each day’s events. Her strong Christian faith was a great support and comfort in good times and bad.

Kathleen was predeceased by her husband, who passed away in January 1995. The sympathy of the community is extended to her sons, John, Samuel and Richard, and daughter Sandra.

The Rev A Adger conducted the funeral service in Seaforde Presbyterian Church on Thursday, January 12, which was followed by interment at Down Cathedral churchyard.
