Mrs Breige Doherty

MRS Breige Doherty (née McGreevy), or ‘the Bru Woman’ as she was commonly known, lived in Ballynahinch for over 40 years, having grown up in Glassdrumman.

She worked for over 40 years in the Civil Service, her time mostly spent in Ballynahinch SSO, and a lot of her work was done in the privacy of her own home.

A ‘wild duck’ all her life, Breige loved the outdoors and spending time with her family. Having a house full of people and feeding as many family and friends as possible were what brought most joy to her life.

Breige was also the host of many memorable parties with her group of friends. Breige was a positive, happy person who had the natural ability to connect with people of any age or background.

Although Breige spent 23 years of her life without her husband, as Seamus passed away so young, she was never lonely. Her wonderful friends and neighbours played a vital role in her life, and she looked forward every week to going shopping with her friends.

Her children, Lisa, Ciaran and Bria, will fondly remember the enjoyment and freedom she felt as she walked with them as children in Fintra Bay on their annual visit to her beloved Killybegs and on her more recent visits amongst her numerous family and friends there.

Life took on a new meaning and Breige was invigorated with her first grandchild, Connor. Connor was followed by Aodan, Sean, Connie, Oisin, Caoimhe and James, who all gave her a new direction to give her love and pass on her wisdom and mischief.

Breige passed away peacefully on March 24 surrounded by her family.
