Mrs Beth Pyper

MRS Elizabeth (Beth) Pyper, of Mount Crescent, Downpatrick, who died on September 4 after a short illness, was a kind and gentle lady whose thoughtfulness and consideration for others were just some of the qualities which made her an admired and respected member of her community.

She was 82 and passed away just 12 weeks after being diagnosed with cancer, an illness she bore the illness with the grace and inner fortitude which she displayed throughout her life.

Mrs Pyper was born in Crossgar in May 1934, the second of three daughters to Thomas and Christina Patterson, who lived in The Square. In her younger days, she enjoyed going to dances and attending social events with her many friends. In later years she enjoyed shopping trips with her sister Anne or cousin Madge, or visiting Newcastle with her nephew Jacob or friends.

She began her working career in the Co-op shop in Downpatrick where she was a diligent and popular member of the staff.

She married her husband, John, who was a breadserver with the Inglis Bakery, in the early 1960s. The couple had three sons, Roger, Rodney and Gavin, who were brought up in a loving family atmosphere.

Mrs Pyper’s family meant everything to her and they returned the love which she bestowed on them in equal measure. She adored her sons and, later, her grandchildren, who brought her so much pleasure and happiness.

The death of John at the age of 61 in November 1995 was a bitter blow, but she showed great courage and strength in coming to terms with her loss.

In a tribute at last Wednesday’s funeral service in Down Parish Church, Mrs Pyper was described by her son, Gavin, as a “little woman with a big heart.” He said she was someone who “radiated love and was blessed with her family, neighbours and friends.”

The Rev Adrian Dorrian, who conducted the service along with the Rev Scott McDonald, said Mrs Pyper had “lived a life full of love and had enriched the people around her.”

Mrs Pyper is survived by her sons, daughters-in-law Siobhan and Hilary, grandchildren Riona, Caoimhe, Ethan, Matthew, Lauren, Joshua, Benjamin and Daniel, and by her sister, Anne. She was predeceased by another sister, Ina.
