Mrs. Marie Douglas

THE death has taken place of Downpatrick woman Mrs. Marie Douglas. She was 74.

A resident at Leaside Gardens, Mrs. Douglas moved to Downpatrick from Norglen Parade in Belfast in 1976 to take her children away from the troubles in the city. She passed away on April 5 at the King’s Castle nursing home in Ardglass.

Her reason for moving to Downpatrick was to ensure her devoted children would have a peaceful and better life. Up until her death, Mrs. Douglas was at the heart of her family and their lives.

Born in Belfast in 1938, she was tragically widowed aged just 36 following the death of her beloved husband Gary who died in an accident while working in England in 1973.

The Downpatrick woman, who was held in high regard, worked for a time at Quinn’s Bakery in Scotch Street where she established a warm rapport with customers.

Mrs. Douglas also loved to play the piano and sing, with music playing a big part in her life. She was also an avid animal lover.

Ten years ago, Mrs. Douglas was diagnosed with cancer, but her determination to fight the disease inspired those around her, with the love and support she received from her family sustaining her through some difficult times.

While her sincerity of purpose in dealing with her cancer gave those around her strength, Mrs. Douglas’ deep faith was a constant companion and solace throughout her illness.

A caring person, Mrs. Douglas was always thinking of others and her children and grandchildren were at the centre of her life and being. She also recently became a great grandmother.

Mrs. Douglas is survived by her sons Paul, Bobby, Gary, Jim, Joseph and daughters Maureen and Alison, brothers Bobby and Joseph, sisters Sheila, Anne and Joan, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her funeral service was held at St. Patrick’s Church in Downpatrick, with Canon Joseph Rogan and Fr. Mulhall officiating. Mrs. Douglas was laid to rest with her late husband at the family burial plot at Milltown Cemetery in Belfast.
