Mrs. Jean McComb

MRS. Jean McComb, of 54 Rathkeltair Road, Downpatrick, passed away at Downe Hospital on January 4. She was aged 83.

She was born in Tullykin, Killyleagh, to Francis and Annie Jane Watson. She attended Ballytrim Primary School and later Miss Telford’s school in Downpatrick.

On leaving school she cycled from her home to work in Hoggs grocery shop in Killyleagh.

She was greatly involved in Second Killyleagh Presbyterian Church and the Red Cross.

In July 1955 she married Joseph McComb and set up home at the Flush, between Killyleagh and Downpatrick.

She took up employment as a cook with the Down County Education Committee and worked at the Meals Kitchen in Downpatrick, Ardglass Primary School, Downpatrick Intermediate School and Down High School, from where she retired in 1988.

After her marriage she was a very active member of Downpatrick Presbyterian Church. She was a born organiser, always thinking of others before herself and asking for nothing in return.

She ran coffee parties at her home for the Church, Downpatrick Cricket Club and to help purchase a cardiac ambulance for Downe Hospital.

She was a founder member of the Ladies’ Committee at Downpatrick Cricket Club and enjoyed nothing better than watching the team play both at home and away.

She was until recently an active member of Downpatrick Women’s Institute. She loved gardening and was widely known for her home baking.

A family woman through and through, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. McComb was a highly respected lady, as was shown by the large attendance at her funeral in Downpatrick Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, January 7.

The Rev. Ernie Boggs spoke of her commitment to her faith and reflected on her dedication to the Church, having been involved with many of its organisations.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Joe, much loved daughter Rosemary and son-in-law Norman.

She was the devoted granny of Stephen and wife Rebecca, Christopher and wife Claire, and Sarah and partner Aaron, loving great grandmother of Harry and Chloe, and dear sister of Harry. She was predeceased by her sister, Gwennie.
