Ardglass woman became lady captain of golf club

Mrs. Ethna McEvoy

DOWNPATRICK woman Ethna McEvoy recently passed away. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Born Ethna Maguire, she was the daughter of James and Anne Maguire and sister of Isobel, Noel, Roddy, Michael, Donny and Connie.

She lived in Downpatrick and attended the Convent of Mercy Primary School and Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch. She was a keen member of Downpatrick Golf Club.

After her marriage to Jack McEvoy, Ethna lived in Belfast where she gave birth to sons Ian, Paul, Alan, Roy, Don, Barry and daughter Frances.

At that time she became a member of Ormeau Golf Club and Ardglass Golf Club but it was in Ardglass where she played most, partaking in the Ladies’ Wednesday competitions.

When Jack and Ethna finally came to live in Ardglass she was able to become more involved in the ladies section, serving on the committee as a member, secretary and in 1980 she became lady captain. She represented the club on many occasions.

She then became involved in the juvenile section. For many years during the holiday period she took names and issued scoreboards to juvenile members every Tuesday at 8am. She was rewarded by being made an honorary member of the club.

Ethna also became interested in playing Bridge and was regarded as a very impressive player in the Ardglass Golf Club Bridge Section. She was chairwoman of the section for several years.

When Ethna was first diagnosed with her illness her first action was to go out and play a round of golf with family members.

She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends in Ardglass, Downpatrick, Newcastle and Ballynahinch.
