Mr Joseph Anthony O’Neill

MR Joe O’Neill, of Newcastle Road, Drumaness, passed away on April 28, 2017, aged 69.

Born to Patrick and Rose Anne O’Neill on January 18, 1948, Joe spent his early years growing up in Saul with his brothers and sisters.

He later trained as a joiner and met his future wife, Frances O’Prey, whom he married in 1972.

At that time living in Scotch Street, Downpatrick, they had their only child, Nicholas, before moving to Loughinisland in 1976.

Joe was a fantastic family man to his wife and son, and later a devoted grandfather to his three grandchildren, Tom, Finn and Liam, for whom he had all the time in the world.

Joe was also much loved by his large extended family circle and was well thought of by all who knew him.

Joe was a well-respected joiner and carpenter, and in his spare time had a keen interest in watching sports, including snooker, cricket and golf.

But it was indoor and outdoor bowls that he was most keenly interested in, being a long standing member of Teconnaught & Crossgar Bowling Club, being captain of many a winning team.

Despite having health issues from his thirties, he always met the difficulties with immense courage, never letting anything prevent him from enjoying life to the

full and providing for his family.

He was a man who always had a positive outlook on life, a good word to say about everyone, and would have been the first to help you out in any way he could due to his generous and caring nature.

He also enjoyed a good night out and was always ready to tell a good story or joke.

Joe was a true gentleman and will be very dearly missed by family, friends and all who knew him.

Joe’s Month’s Mind Mass will be held in St Malachy’s Church, Loughinisland, on Tuesday, May 30, at 7.30pm.
