Mr John (Jackie) McDowell

THE death has occurred after a brief illness, of Mr. John Mc Dowell (Jackie) who passed away peacefully at Daisy Hill Hospital on October 8 surrounded by his loving family.

Jackie had just celebrated his 81st birthday in fine health on October 3. And so, although his sudden death would seem untimely, his family’s most recent memories are happy; of Jackie indulging his sweet tooth and enjoying being spoiled.

Jackie touched many lives in his lifetime which was reflected in the large number and diversity of those who paid their respects at his wake and funeral.

The countless tributes made in recent weeks have repeatedly described him as an absolute gentleman, respected by many, always looking out for others and ready to do a good turn for family, friends and neighbours.

Jackie was a true Mourne man, only briefly leaving these shores at the age of 18 to work in England, before coming home to Annalong in 1955.

In his working life, Jackie earned the deserved reputation of being a uniquely gifted stonemason.

He was widely considered a master craftsman, and his expertise was sought for several radio and television programmes about the art of stonemasonry.

Jackie leaves a legacy of exemplary stonework across Northern Ireland and was proud to see the tradition being carried on by his family.

Jackie took enormous joy from life’s simple pleasures. He was immensely, but quietly, proud of his family and his grandchildren truly delighted him. He relished a celebration, particularly New Year’s Eve.

He loved to travel to sunnier climes, especially to visit his son Chris in South Africa, but was always happy to come home to his wee corner of Kilhorn Green.

He enjoyed his daily dander to the shops accompanied by his dog Max, having the craic with friends and neighbours along the way.

He kept his mind sharp with crosswords and puzzles, devoured the daily papers and liked nothing more than to relax in front of the telly. He led an unpretentious yet full and contented life.

Jackie McDowell will be sorely missed as a loyal and devoted husband, dad, grandad and great-grandad, brother, uncle and friend.

He will be fondly remembered as a colourful character with a twinkle in his distinctive blue eyes and as a thoroughly decent man by all who were fortunate to have known him.

Jackie is survived by his wife Sheila, his children John, Kevin, Cathy, Christopher, Colette, Helen and Anne, sons and daughters in-law, his 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, his siblings Sheila, Geraldine, Betty, Pauline, Alicia, Marie and Malachy and their families, and his relatives in England.

Jackie’s funeral was conducted by Fr Sean Gilmore in St Mary’s Church, Glassdrumman, on October 11.
