Mr James Smyth

MR James Smyth, of Saul Street, Downpatrick, died suddenly and peacefully in Downe Hospital on  Friday, October 9.

Jimmy, as he was known to all, was one of 13 children born to Mary and Tommy Smyth in Killough on November 1, 1931. In his teenage years he worked as a waiter at Bishopscourt RAF station before taking up employment with the MacNabb family, who held him in high esteem.

Jimmy married the love of his life, Kathleen (Kitty) Galbraith on August 26, 1951. They went on to have seven children and worked hard to rear their family.

Jimmy was a founder member of Downpatrick Credit Union which he served with loyalty and commitment until his departure in 2013. He also served his community through his work with the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Jimmy was a family man and was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jimmy and Kitty enjoyed socialising and dancing and were familiar figures at dances in Owenbeg Bowling Club, Downpatrick Cricket Club and Downpatrick Golf Club.

Jimmy greatly missed Kitty after her death 20 years ago. Jimmy’s family miss him too, but believe his gentle soul rests safely in the arms of Jesus beside his beloved Kitty.
