Mr. Patrick Galbraith

IT was with deep sadness that the Downpatrick community learned of the death of Mr. Patrick Galbraith, who died peacefully at his home in St. Dillon’s Avenue on March 13. He was 74.

Paddy was born on June 10, 1938, one of ten children to Kathleen (Kitty) and Robert (Bob) Galbraith. He was educated at St. Patrick’s Boys’ Primary School and St. Patrick’s Secondary School.

Paddy began his working career with the Co-op in Church Street, Downpatrick. Later, like so many others, he went to England to seek work, but returned home to be best man for his brother, Brian, and decided to stay in Downpatrick. He was fortunate to obtain a job with the Northern Ireland Electricity Board where he spent 30 happy years up until his retirement.

Paddy lived happily with his niece, Kathleen, her husband, Damien, and their children, Marie Theresa and Christopher. He loved the children like a grandfather and he took further pleasure at the arrival of Amy and Sean, with whom he also spent a lot of time. He was also immensely proud when Marie-Therese got married.

Paddy was an avid Liverpool supporter and also enjoyed horse racing and walking his dogs.

Canon Sean Rogan celebrated requiem mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Downpatrick, on March 15.

Paddy is survived by his sisters, Anne Quinn and Margaret Donaldson, and brother Brian. He was predeceased by his sisters, Marie and Kitty, and brothers Jim and Bertie.

His Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church at 7.30pm on April 19. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
