Mr. Oliver McMullan

RESIDENTS of the wider Downpatrick community were saddened to learn of the passing of Oliver McMullan, a popular local plumber, who died peacefully at his home on February 12 after a lengthy illness.

Oliver was born on July 11, 1955, in Ballykinlar. A son of the late Peter and Anna McMullan, he was the youngest of five children. He attended De La Salle Secondary School and on leaving school he commenced an apprenticeship in plumbing.

He worked as a self-employed plumber and was extremely well known in the local area, carrying out work to a high standard for locals, family, friends and many local businesses. He was always pleasant and cheerful.

Oliver married his wife, Vera, on February 6, 1982. They had two sons, Neil and Peter. Oliver was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, and much loved brother, brother-in-law and uncle.

In his earlier years he was involved in many sporting activities, including water-skiing, basketball, badminton and Gaelic football, which he played for the Ballykinlar club and for Down at minor and senior levels.

Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury which forced him to retire from football at the age of 23. Oliver later developed a keen interest in golf and along with Vera forged many lasting friendships.

Throughout his illness Oliver was cared for at home by his family and embraced each stage with courage, dignity and without complaint.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and will always be remembered for his accommodating, pleasant, humorous and gentle manner.
