Mr. John Quinn

IT was with great sadness that the community in Downpatrick learned of the death of Mr. John Quinn, who passed away peacefully at his home in Carrickfergus on August 15 following a short illness which was very patiently borne. He was 62.

He was the only son of the late Jim and Ethna Quinn, who ran a very successful butcher’s shop in Market Street, Downpatrick.

He is survived by his three sisters to whom he had a very strong bond — Maureen (Downpatrick), Ethna Houston (Texas, USA) and Paula Houston (Texas, USA).

His passing also leaves in great sorrow his wife, Maria, children Beverley and Karl, grandson Rhys, nieces Shauna and Erin, nephews Gavin and Ryan, grand nephew Owen, grand niece Sophie, brothers-in-law Ewan, Tony, Michael and John, and sister-in-law Carmel.

All who knew John would describe him as a witty, kind, thoughtful and generous man with a big personality. He was affectionately known among his friends as ‘Yawnee.’

His memory will be cherished by those whose lives he touched.

Always with a big smile, he a happy disposition and loved playing jokes on those he knew. He was a devoted husband and father, and a brother second to none.

The largely attended Requiem Mass, which bore testament to a fine man, was held in St. Nicholas’ Church, Carrickfergus, on August 20 and was followed by cremation at Roselawn Crematorium.

John was an amazing man who will never be forgotten by his family and friends.

His month’s mind mass will take place in St. Nicholas’ Church, Carrickfergus, on Saturday, September 13, at 6pm.
