Mr. Alexander Chambers

THE death has occurred of popular Downpatrick farmer and groundsman, Alexander Chambers. He passed away peacefully in Lagan Valley Hospital on July 17 at the age of 94.

In his early years he farmed at Drumgavelin, near Ballynahinch, before moving to Spa and eventually Newcastle. After giving up farming he undertook several different jobs including a period in the RUC, during which he guarded former Prime Minister Brian Faulkner at his Seaforde home.

Later he found his niche as a groundsman and eventual team leader with the South Eastern Education and Library Board. Beyond his retirement in the early 1980s he continued to work part time as caretaker at Donard Park and Murlough Reserve.

Throughout his life he had regularly attended Magherahamlet Presbyterian Church and had been a long serving member of Dunmore Orange Lodge 1454 and Ballynahinch Black Preceptory 103. His long membership of both organisations was recognised on his 90th birthday.

He was a founder member as a cornet player and later drum major with Dunmore Silver Band.

In retirement he enjoyed exploring the whole of Ireland, walking in the nearby Mournes and the occasional trip to visit his son, Vic, and family in Wales.

He was an inveterate collector of antiques and became an enthusiastic old-time dancer. Indeed he organised and compered dances throughout the county.

In recent few years his health deteriorated and he spent the last seven years as a resident in Spa Nursing Home where he was cared for with consideration and affection.

During his long life he was a much respected member of the communities in which he lived and was a valued and friendly neighbour. He will be greatly missed by all his many friends and particularly by his immediate family.

He is survived by wife Nellie, son Vic , daughter Elsie, daughter-in-law Virginia , grandchildren Anna and Sarah, and great-granddaughter Megan.

A large number attended the funeral service and interment at Magherahamlet Presbyterian Church on July 20 at which Rev. David Hyndman officiated. His son paid a tribute and granddaughter Anna read a lesson. Music was provided by Alex’s daughter, Elsie, on the organ and she was joined by friends from the singing group Harmony to perform a musical item.
