Michaela inspires UK-wide campaign

CROSSGAR’S Michaela Hollywood has helped launched a new initiative to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

In June, Michaela, who has spinal muscular atrophy, completed an epic challenge of a marathon in her power wheelchair and local company Disability Needs was so inspired by her achievement it has come up with “Move a Merry Mile” initiative to raise for the UK charity.

It will take the form of a short walk on Sunday, November 29, starting at Belfast’s Botanic Gardens and finishing at the City Hall with all participants asked to dress up.

Michaela, who has recently been recognised by Prime Minister David Cameron for her campaigning and fundraising support of Muscular Dystrophy UK is backing the Belfast event.

“This is an opportunity for anyone to come along and support Muscular Dystrophy UK. The route is flat and accessible, so I’d love as many people as possible to come out in their wheelchairs, shoes or other mobility aid to show the true Christmas spirit and help everyone with a muscle-wasting condition. It is great to see Disability Needs helping the charity generate vital awareness and funds,” she added.

Disability Needs Sales Director, Mark Spottiswoode, said a Disability Needs team member has supplied Michaela’s family with a range of different equipment for a number of years.

“When I heard about Michaela’s recent achievement I was inspired and wanted to help maintain momentum, build awareness and vital funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK. A number of our customers have been diagnosed with muscle wasting conditions, so this is a charity close to our hearts,” he added.

The fundraiser starts at noon at Botanic Gardens and anyone who would like to participate is asked to email kerry@disabilityneeds.com. To donate, log on at http://www.justgiving.com/disability-needs. Suggested donation is £10 per adult, £5 per child or £20 per family. Every child taking part will receive a goody bag from Santa.
