Magowan pedals way into the record books

Magowan pedals way into the record books

7 August 2013

ROUND 18 OF Dromara Cycling Club’s summer club league took place last Thursday night when 23 cyclists gathered on the Dundrum Road in Dromara to complete a 10 mile time trial.

The weather was dry with a strong headwind on the way out to the turn at Guiness Primary School before enjoying the tail wind on the homeward leg of the course.

Riders got underway just after 7pm, the timekeepers set each individual off at one minute intervals, which changed to 30 second intervals on down the starting order.

After all the riders had finished, the times where finalised and it was Chris Magowan who was fastest on the night with a time of 23 minutes and 50 seconds.

This also meant that Chris set the record fastest time on the Dundrum line course which hasn’t been broken for a couple of years until now.

Second on the night and 16 seconds slower was brother Gavin in a time of 24:06. Anthony Quinn posted a quick time of 24:42 as he didn’t have the same aero bikes and kit as Chris and Gavin.

Many thanks to the time keepers and marshals. The next round of the club league is tomorrow night, a 16 mile time trial on the Hillsborough-Ballynahinch course. Sign on from 6.30pm at Governor’s Gate in Hillsborough. Please see the club message board for more details.

Well done to all the club members who took part in the fourth round of the Ulster XC series at Kilbroney Forest park on Saturday.

The races also doubled up as support races for the World Police and Fire Games mountain bike races, which added to overall atmosphere and excitement on the day.

Also on the day was the practice for the downhill race which was to be held the next day, which had the park hiving with competitors and spectators alike.

Many thanks to the timekeepers and marshals who helped out on the day, and also well done to the WPFG competitors who came from countries such as Norway, USA, Canada and Latvia to name but a few.

The next and final round of the Ulster XC League is on Sunday, September 1, at Craigavon Lakes. Keep an eye on the Ulster XC website for pre-entry opening and any other information which may be of use.

Dromara CC had a large crowd of riders enter the Madigan GP in Carrickfergus on Saturday past.

The races were held after the World Police and Fire Games road races where finished, and both took in the same 18 mile hilly circuit along the coast road to Magheramorne before climbing up to Glenoe and descending back into Carrickfergus.

In the A4 race after two laps of the circuit, Graeme Craft rode a brilliant race to finish fourth, with Tommy Downey, Gary Bailey, Stephen Wallace and Ivan Bradford all finishing comfortably in the bunch.

In the A1/2/3 race Nathan Mullan, Zak Hanna, Gavin Magowan and Ryan Calvert had to complete three laps of the circuit totalling 55 miles. After a fast race with plenty of attacking going on Nathan finished a creditable 10th place and first A3 rider. Well done to all the Dromara riders who competed.

Sunday sees the club hold the famous Mourne Sportive and Hilly Leisure Tours, starting at Dromara Village FC before taking in the spectacular scenery the Dromara hills and Mourne Mountains have to offer.

The Mourne Sportive is 105km and takes in 11000ft of climbing, including ascents of the Cornmill, Dree Hill and Spelga Dam. This is pre-entry only and can be done via the Dromara CC website where there is a link to Entry Central.

The Hilly 125km, 85km and 60km events have both pre-entry and entry on the day. We hope to see a big crowd in attendance. Please visit the club website at www.dromaracc.co.uk for more information.
